Census records indicate that the three oldest children were born in
Prussia (conflicting information regarding Herman).
They must have immigrated c. 1845-1849 (they are in the 1850 census).
Census records also say that wife Fredericka had a total of 11 children,
of whom 8 were living in 1910. Johann was probably from
Pomerania, somewhere near
Tribsow.
(Some of the Steffens who were members of Trinity Milwaukee
c. 1850 were from Schwirsen.)
